Punjab Kings fielder Xavier Bartlett spilled the ball while covering for a sweep shot as the ball crossed the fence. The umpire, however, awarded five runs to Kolkata Knight Riders and not just four for a boundary. Here's why.

Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) Xavier Bartlett produced one of the funniest fielding mishaps of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Tuesday during the Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) chase . The Australian fast bowler Bartlett attempted a throw back to the stumps from the square leg boundary but the ball slipped out of his hands and returned to the fence. The incident occurred during the fifth ball of the eighth over when Venkatesh Iyer played a sweep shot against Yuzvendra Chahal in a 112-run chase at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.

Bartlett was quick to grab the ball and it looked like KKR would settle for a single but he somehow allowed the ball to slip out of his hands while attempting the throw. The ball also didn’t spill in front of him, rather bounced at the back side and crossed the fence. Xavier Bartlett brother what?? 😭😭 #PBKSvKKR #KKRvsPBKS #PBKSvsKKR pic.

twitter.com/htltViRyBb This resulted in five runs for KKR. Yes, not four but five runs? Are you confused as to why the KKR team was awarded five runs when the ball crossed the fence? The explanation is simple.

By the time the ball slipped out of Bartlett’s hand, Iyer and Angkrish Raghuvanshi had completed a single which is why the umpire considered the mishap as an overthrow and not a direct boundary, allowing five runs to KKR. One run from the single taken by Iyer and Raghuvanshi and four more runs for overthrow boundary. The umpire’s decision is well supported by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

As per clause 19.8, “If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be 1) any runs for penalties awarded to either side 2) and the allowance for the boundary 3) and the runs completed by the batters, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act." The good thing for PBKS was that Bartlett was quick to recover from the misfield as he took the catch of Raghuvanshi in the 10th over off Chahal to inflict a big damage on KKR.

Chahal eventually finished with a four-wicket haul as PBKS clinched the low-scoring thriller to climb to the fourth spot in the IPL 2025 point stable..
