Employers of labour in Nigeria have been urged to prioritise employees’ welfare by ensuring physical wellness and good environment conducive for maximum effectiveness. Chief Operations Officer (COO), Redeemers’ Health Village (RHV), Redemption City of God, Mowe, Ogun State, Mrs. Laura Ade, spoke in Lagos during a panel of discussion at this year’s Masterpiece Resource Development Centre’s yearly entrepreneurs’ conference and trade expo.
According to Ade, from operational point of view, organisations should create employee-assistance programmes, provide environment for team bonding, provide regular employee checks: pre-employment and on the job, to ensure sustainable wellness of the workforce. She enjoined corporate organisations to take advantage of the various discounted employee wellness packages at the Redeemers’ Health Village to ensure that their staffers enjoy healthy body and sound mind. She recalled that RHV held a Day Out for all staff of the organisation recently, from consultants to cleaners and gatemen, which enabled everyone to bond, sit and eat on the same table, irrespective of their positions in the organisation.
Ade said affordability and accessibility were keys to good community health. “Redeemers’ Health Village emphasises preventive care and wellness and offers a range of affordable healthcare services from counselling to preventive health and treatment across several medical fields ,” she said. Other speakers at the panel included Senior Special Assistant to Lagos State Governor on Public Health, Dr.
Toni Adeyemi and Founder, Salt Spa/ Wellness Centre, Lagos, Mrs. Vandana Kaushal. Adeyemi said the Lagos State government has made healthcare affordable through the state health insurance scheme: Ilera eko.
This is in addition to upgrading the existing healthcare infrastructure in the state and building of new ones, especially primary healthcare centres across the state. Also, Kaushal emphasised the importance of sleep to general wellness and productivity at work, adding that people should try to get, at least, seven hours of sleep every night or nap in the afternoon to complement..
