Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria (CSEAN) has called for concrete actions to strengthen cybersecurity awareness in Nigeria amidst increasing reliance on digital technologies. The call is against the backdrop of a recent study by the association, revealing that although there is a high level of awareness of cybercrime but also identified gaps in password security practices and the need for more robust cybersecurity measures. The group stated this in a statement signed by CSEAN’s President, Ade Shoyinka and Director of Research and Development, John Odumesi, to mark the 2024 National Cybersecurity Awareness Month with the theme, ‘Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Cyber Resilience: Building A Secure Future Bridge’.
They lamented that a significant portion of the Nigerian population, especially in rural areas, lacks basic cybersecurity knowledge making them vulnerable to various cyber threats. The experts also pointed out that many organizations, particularly Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), lack adequate cybersecurity infrastructure and resources, leaving them exposed to cyber-attacks. This, according to them, is worsened by a shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals, as they struggle to effectively address the growing threat landscape, adding that phishing attacks remain a persistent threat, with individuals falling victim to sophisticated social engineering tactics.
“Data breaches continue to occur, compromising sensitive personal and financial information. Cybercrime, including online fraud, identity theft, and ransomware attacks, is on the rise, causing significant financial losses and reputational damage,” the statement reads. CSEAN however, stressed that to address growing cybersecurity challenges, individuals, organisations, and the government must continue to take concerted action including prioritising digital literacy, strong password hygiene, online vigilance, and regular software updates.
They also called on organisations to invest in cybersecurity infrastructure, train employees, develop incident response plans and prioritise data protection..
