Sutherland Shire Historical Society's October meeting will feature a talk by John Oakes on the construction of the railway between Mortdale and Scarborough. or signup to continue reading Built during the years 1885 to 1888, the original line included a single-track lattice truss bridge over the Georges River, several large culverts and eight tunnels, only one of which is still in use. Much of the original line - replaced between 1914 and 1920 - has long fascinated dedicated rail buffs such as Mr Oakes.
Following this old line on foot, he has had to clear undergrowth, ford several creeks and slog through mud. In the past, five of the original eight tunnels were leased from the railways for mushroom cultivation, but this is no longer the case. A retired teacher, John volunteers for the Australian Railway Historical Society and specialises in the 'forgotten' railways around Sydney.
All are welcome to attend this meeting to be held at 1.30 on Saturday October 19. Sutherland Shire Historical Society meets at Stapleton Centre, 3A Stapleton Avenue, Sutherland - just a short walk from the train station.
