An expert says that making babies nap in a light room will help in not cutting into their nighttime rest.

Napping beside a washing machine might not seem like a good idea, but an expert is recommending that parents have their babies nap in a light room with background noise like a washing machine and not in the dark. The Guardian quotes anthropologist and researcher Professor Helen Ball recommending that babies and toddlers sleep in a light room with background noise because they can wake themselves up if they have had enough sleep and it will not disrupt their actual nighttime rest.Ball advises The Lullaby Trust charity and has also conducted sleep research with more than 5,000 parents and babies at Durham University.

She was also awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize winner in 2018 for her research on parent and infant sleep.“Putting them down to sleep in a silent dark room at a set time for a prolonged period during the day is great for parents who want some down-time or to get some housework done. But it doesn't make sense at all for babies who, when they have these mini night-times during the day, are more likely to then be awake during the night,” she explained to The Guardian.

This study on the napping or sleeping schedules of babies is just the latest done on how one's sleep schedule affects one's health. In December last year, a study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found that an irregular sleep schedule can lead to a higher risk of stroke, heart attack, and heart failure, even if they get a full night's sleep. The study found that irregular sleepers were 26 percent more likely to suffer from a stroke, heart attack, and heart failure compared to regular speakers.

Moderately irregular sleepers had an eight percent risk.In 2023, researchers discovered that a good night's sleep can extend one's life, with young people with beneficial sleep habits shown to be less likely to die early. The study also showed that about eight percent of deaths of any cause can be traced back to poor sleep patterns.

In 2021, a study published in the European Heart Journal - Digital Health showed a connection between cardiovascular disease and sleeping before or after 10 p.m. People who slept after midnight had a 25 percent increased risk of getting heart disease.
