There is a big snake on the loose in Sutherland Shire, and it can potentially cause harm. or signup to continue reading Residents have been asked to be on the lookout for an exotic snake that is a biosecurity threat to Australian wildlife. A red-tailed Boa constrictor was seen slithering on the sand near the boat ramp by Tomy Ugly's Bridge, Sylvania, last Sunday, April 6.
A resident spotted the snake and on Facebook. The Boa constrictor is not native to Australia (it originates from Central and South America) and is at high risk of establishing populations. It can live up to 30 years.
The species carry viruses such as Incusion Body Disease and Ophidian paramyxovirus, which are fatal to Australian snakes as they have no resistance to these exotic diseases. They are one of the world's largest snakes and grow to an average length of three metres. Its jaws are lined with small, hooked teeth that are used to hold its prey while it wraps its body around to suffocate.
The snake feeds on small mammals, birds and their eggs, bats, small lizards and occasionally amphibians. They can be a threat to small children, domestic pets and other animals. It has distinctive patterns on the body and an arrow-shaped head.
People are asked to contact Snake Wranglers if they see the snake and are urged not to attempt to catch or approach it. Tyler Gibbons from Snake Wranglers says quick reporting can help protect the local environment. "We are working directly with the Department of Primary Industries, Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water, and Sutherland Shire Council to locate and safely remove it," he said.
"Boas are illegal in Australia. It was probably a pet that got out, or someone just released it. Maybe it got too big, or someone can't afford to feed it.
"It might have gone into someone's house, gone for a swim or is sitting on someone's boat. They are aquatic but can also be up trees. or Sutherland Shire Council if you see it.
