Vadodara: The son of a former BJP municipal councillor was stabbed to death on the SSG Hospital campus in the early hours of Monday. The ex-councillor, a BJP scheduled caste morcha member, said the killing occurred despite the presence of police personnel. Tapan Parmar (27), the son Ramesh Parmar, was stabbed multiple times near the hospital canteen in the early hours of Monday.

He had gone to SSG to inquire about the treatment of Vikram Parmar, who was allegedly stabbed by a history-sheeter, Babar Pathan, in a fight in the Nagarwada area. Tapan was accompanied by a friend, Mitesh Rajput. According to the FIR filed by Rajput at Raopura police station, after checking on Vikram, Tapan and he went to the canteen.

Pathan and others soon arrived at the spot. Rajput said that two persons held him while Pathan stabbed Tapan. Rajput managed to get away and returned with others, by which time Pathan and his accomplices had fled.

The group took Tapan for treatment, but he died soon after. Ramesh was informed and rushed to the hospital. He told mediapersons that the killing took place in the presence of police personnel at the hospital.

Rajput and others examined CCTV footage from the hospital and identified two persons — Shabnam Mansuri and Shabir alias Lakha. Shabnam is the wife of Wasim Mansuri, who was also wounded in the fight at Nagarwada and was accompanying Pathan. Joint police commissioner Manoj Ninama said the groups had initially clashed at Mehtawadi in Nagarwada, where Wasim, Vikram and one Dharmesh Patel were injured.

Ninama said a case for attempted murder had been registered at Karelibaug police station regarding that incident. He added that the clash had taken place over gambling money. According to Ninama, after sending Wasim to SSG Hospital, Pathan went to Karelibaug police station to register an FIR.

While an official was working on the complaint, Pathan said he was unwell and was allowed to go to SSG Hospital with one Shabbir. Sources in the police said Pathan may have feigned illness to go the hospital and settle scores. City unit BJP president Dr Vijay Shah, who spoke to state home minister Harsh Sanghavi soon after the killing, said the footage clearly showed this.

Shah added that Pathan was handed a bladed weapon at the hospital itself. A case for murder and other offences along with violations of the Atrocities Act was registered at Raopura police station after Tapan's death. Five people, including Pathan, have been arrested for the murder.

Former president of the state BJP SC Morcha and former Vadodara deputy mayor Dr Jivraj Chauhan said that Tapan was a straightforward person and the family has been with the party since Ramesh's father's days..
