The former policeman who pleaded guilty to assaulting an intoxicated man and causing his death has been sentenced to four years and 11 months imprisonment. Fifita Toma Tawake, 28, was sentenced before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe on Friday after he was convicted of one count of manslaughter. It was heard at the Suva High court that on January 13, this year, Tawake, while drunk, punched an intoxicated man who had tapped the back of their car while they were slowly running a red light at Central Street in Suva.

The court found that Tawake had no regard or respect for the victim after he was left lying unconscious on the pave way. Justice Rajasinghe said it was disrespectful of Tawake to drag the man to the corner of Westpac head office and leaving him laying there in the pouring rain. The court considered that he was a first offender and he was remorseful for his action and pleaded guilty on the first day of trial.

Tawake will now spend four years and 11 months in prison with non-parole period of two years and 11 months. Feedback: [email protected].
