EXCLUSIVE: Saiyami Kher on the current box office slump, “Honestly, no one has any idea”

2023 turned out to be a fantastic year for Bollywood in terms of box office. Films like Pathaan, Gadar 2, Jawan and Animal kept the cash registers ringing and how. But since 2024, there haven’t been too many occasions for the producers, exhibitors and distributors to celebrate as a large number of films have not worked and the situation is the same currently.During an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Saiyami Kher was asked where the industry is going wrong. She said, “Honestly, no one has any idea. I think we’re in a phase of reflection. Audiences have evolved, they have the option of watching Adolescence and White Lotus on OTT. They’re demanding honest, engaging content. We can’t take them for granted anymore.”However, she also pointed out that there has been fair share of success too for the industry in this period. “I don’t think it’s all bleak,” she said. “Films like 12th Fail and Stree 2 are those examples that give hope. We’re in a transition, and transitions are uncomfortable, but necessary. I really do hope we focus more on writing and not just creating ‘projects’.”Saiyami will next be seen in the role of a tough cop in the Sunny Deol starrer Jaat, which releases in theatres tomorrow. Speaking about the film, she said, “It’s the most commercial film I have been a part of and was definitely out of my comfort zone. So, there was lots of learning.
