Craig Macrae, a distinguished action director and stunt coordinator with over two decades of experience, has made a mark in both Hollywood and Bollywood. He worked on Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) as a stunt double and performer and in Bollywood, he has served as an action director in Pathaan (2023), Jawan (2023), Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (2024), etc. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, he spoke about his upcoming film, Alpha, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari. It is produced by Yash Raj Films and is a part of the Spy Universe.Craig Macrae began by saying, “This is my first Bollywood film which is led by not one but two ladies. I was unsure about what to expect because an action film with two female leads depends heavily on the willpower of the actresses. If they don’t prep and dedicate themselves to their roles, you are always going to struggle. You have actors like Tiger Shroff who was clear from a long time that he was going to indulge in action movies. Hence, he’s been training for it for years. But the actresses often have spent a lot of time doing love stories or stuff which is not really action-related. That obviously puts them at a disadvantage. But when a film like Alpha comes up, you have to either give it everything or maybe you should not do it.”He continued, “Alia and Sharvari gave it their all. They trained for months even before the movie started. They gave every minute of their time for every piece of rehearsal. They learned every bit of choreography with absolute dedication. Hence, working on this film was a blast. They are both lovely people to work with too. They were committed to making sure that the project was successful because of the amount of energy that they put in.”He added, “The film has a huge amount of action and it was specifically designed for Alia and Sharvari. Everything in the film is quite unique to them. It’s going to be a very cool movie. I am sure the audiences are blown away by what we’ve done.”When asked how many months of prep Alia Bhatt and Sharvari do for Alpha, Craig Macrae revealed, “They began working on the film 3 months before we started the action design. Jason flew down from the USA. He specializes in training actors. He was already prepping them before we even got out there. As soon as me and my team came on board, there was another month or two of prep that we were doing. The ladies were there pretty much every day. They put in 100% of their effort.”When asked about the most difficult scene in Bollywood for him, Craig Macrae revealed, “That’s a good question. I’d say that the hospital scene in Jawan was quite difficult. I have been working in Bollywood for so many years. I have picked up a few phrases but I haven’t got the time to learn the language properly. It’s a shame as in certain situations, where we have to coordinate with a large group, it makes it quite difficult.”Talking about the said scene, he stated, “There must be 200 to 300 extras and it was difficult coordinating while all the action was going on. Hence, it was the most challenging scene because of the scale of coordination. We had different layers of people. We had stunt doubles and actors in the middle. Then we had the most experienced stunt guys in the closest proximity and they were doing the main action. We also had action extras and junior artists in the layer behind. We needed the junior artists to look quite convincing in combat scenes.”Craig Macrae added, “Even the ones in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan were challenging too because of the level of action we were working at over there, be it dropping helicopters or riding bikes through the cities of London. It required a lot of coordination and care to be taken as well.”Also Read: EXCLUSIVE: Action director Craig Macrae ECSTATIC with the response to Sky Force; talks highly of Akshay Kumar: “He’s very good at imbibing fight choreography notes, that too very fast.
