Samuel Sila Mathew Unjah SIBU (Oct 18): The Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu branch has planned several exciting events to commemorate its 50th anniversary celebration this year. Its secretary Samuel Sila Mathew Unjah said the celebration will kick off with a thanksgiving prayer on Nov 23 at Rumah SDNU Sibu at Taman Bougenvilla, Mile 8 Jalan Ulu Oya. “On Nov 30, we will organise a fun walk at Permai Lake Garden, along with a blood donation drive and health screening at the same venue.

The highlight of the celebration will be the Golden Jubilee Dinner on Dec 7, taking place at Good Happiness Restaurant in Jalan Pahlawan. “Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas is expected to grace the event as the guest of honour, along with other notable guests including Sibu branch’s pioneer leaders,” he said in a statement. On the dinner, Samuel said there will be a tribute to former leaders of the branch, a presentation on the branch’s history, and awards for members and their children who excelled academically.

The theme of the celebration, ‘From Roots to Wings, The Journey Continues’, captures the essence of the branch’s growth, resilience, as well as the efforts of its past and present leaders, he added. Samuel said SDNU Sibu was officially registered under the Societies Act 1966 on Dec 7, 1974. “It was founded with its humble office at the Methodist Iban Centre at Queen’s Way here and led by its first chairman, the late Temenggong Jonathan Bangau Renang.

“Since its modest beginnings, the branch has grown tremendously to become the largest SDNU branch in Sarawak,” he added. Dinner tickets are still available for purchase. Those interested can contact Samuel on 013-7117477 or SDNU Sibu treasurer Athanasius Jala on 013-8165667.
