Every gardener knows the sinking feeling of looking out over the lawn after a long and chilly winter, only to see the grass is looking very sad indeed. Then, it’s a race against time to get the lawn looking fresh and green, ready to be enjoyed in the warmer months. Luckily, there are plenty of products available that will help gardeners to restore their lawns to glory, including this massive 5kg tub of iron sulphate from Guard-En-Force, now available on Amazon for £24.

95. Also commonly known as ferrous sulfate and sulphate of iron, iron sulphate is something of a lawn’s best friend. It has a wide variety of uses, including lawn greening, turf hardening, preventing worm casts and more, and is renowned for its use in creating and maintaining a lush green lawn.

It can be applied all year round for maintenance, and can be applied wet - diluted in a sprayer or watering can - or dry, scattered by hand. Iron sulphate is typically applied at a rate of between one gram and five grams per square meter, with one kilogram having a coverage of 200 to 1000 square meters - so this 5kg tub should last a good while. While this tub is a great deal for under £25, there are some alternative products out there.

For example, B&Q has a kilo of ULTIMA-PLUS XP Premium Iron Sulphate , which covers up to 1000 square meters and can also be applied dry or diluted with water, for £9.95. Elsewhere the Lawnpack is offering their Deeper Green Iron Sulphate for £10.

95, a product which they say can help to prevent lawn disease and also "produces a rapid green-up of turf". The Guard-En-Force product has a 4.4 star rating on Amazon.

One happy customer said: “Works beautifully. Moss dead and lawn lovely and green. And a 5kg tub is going to last me forever.

” “Very good, nice rich green lawn now where it was yellow,” said another. “I've been using the liquid equivalent of this for a couple of years but it was becoming too expensive - this powdered version is actually better by far, with the advantage that it keeps really well in its container,” a third said. However, some shoppers did encounter issues, including one who said: “Having been used to using tech grade iron sulphate for a similar price per kilo, I thought I'd give this Guard-en-Force a go.

I used a drum to dissolve it first. It really had no very strong smell of iron sulphate and left a residue of silt and sand. I would have to use five times as much of it to get the same effect as 100% iron sulphate.

” “It probably will work, but the application instructions are vague,” said another. “I over-treated on the first application and nearly ruined my (very average) lawn.”.
