DALLAS — The Dallas Cowboys are looking into hiring former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus as their new defensive coordinator, WFAA Cowboys insider Ed Werder confirmed Friday. This development comes less than an hour after news broke that the Cowboys would be hiring Brian Schottenheimer as their next head coach. Eberflus, who was fired from the Bears organization after a brutal Thanksgiving Day loss to the Detroit Lions, is familiar with the Cowboys as he served as a defensive assistant under Rod Marinelli on Jason Garrett's staff from 2011-2017.

Corrected: Eberflus has emerged as a candidate to be the next DC and discussed the position but team will first conduct interviews as required by league rules before final decision, per source. https://t.co/eKjJSTOLJM The former Bears head coach would replace Mike Zimmer, who led the Cowboys defense for just one season under Mike McCarthy.

In the 2024-2025 season, the Cowboys ranked 28th in total defense, giving up an average of 355.2 yards per game and ranked dead last in red zone defense. With that being said, Eberflus would have some great pieces to work with on his side of the ball, including Cowboys star pass rusher Micah Parsons.
