A senior Political Science professor at Meerut College has been permanently barred from all examination and evaluation duties by Chaudhary Charan Singh University after a university-level inquiry found her responsible for setting an exam paper that included a question seen as 'objectionable' by some students and officials, a report states. The controversy erupted over a question in the second semester Political Science paper conducted on April 2, which mentioned the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in a context that reportedly linked the organisation to the growth of religious and caste-based politics, according to a TOI report. The same question also referenced other groups like the Naxalites and the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front.
Following protests led by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)—the student wing of the RSS—on campus, the university took action against Professor Seema Panwar, the head of the Political Science department. The demonstrations took place two days after the exam. "She has been debarred from all examinations and evaluation work in the university for life," said Dhirendra Kumar Verma, registrar of Chaudhary Charan Singh University.
He confirmed that an internal inquiry had concluded Panwar was the one who had set the question paper. Verma added that the professor had admitted her error in writing. "She has apologised in writing that she did not do this intentionally to hurt anyone," he told PTI.
Meanwhile, ABVP members submitted a memorandum to university officials, demanding strict disciplinary action over what they termed a deliberate attempt to malign the RSS through academic content.
