TENANTS who breach the terms of their tenancy agreements with the Public Rental Board will face eviction, with no exceptions, says Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa.Responding to questions about recent evictions following the discovery of drugs in PRB properties, Mr Nalumisa defended the decision, emphasising the importance of upholding peace and order within PRB estates.“Before these tenants enter those properties, they have to do some kind of arrangement.
It’s called a tenancy agreement,” Mr Nalumisa said.“If there are breaches of those conditions, the Public Rental Board reserves the right to terminate the agreement and relocate those tenants.”Mr Nalumisa reiterated that while the Government supported public housing, it also had a duty to protect compliant tenants from social issues caused by others.
“It’s only fair that tenants who follow the rules deserve to live in those flats without any interference from those who do not.“This kind of enforcement also serves as a deterrent.”Although he did not confirm the exact number of families evicted so far, Mr Nalumisa said only those found to have breached their tenancy agreements had been removed.
“As a landlord, it’s only fair that those who don’t comply must be given the right treatment, in this case, eviction notices.“We want peaceful estates for families.”Mr Nalumisa said the PRB had been facing growing pressure to balance its role in providing affordable housing with ensuring safety and compliance within its communities as drug cases continue to rise.
