Sounds like a dream scenario for anyone who doesn’t want to be bogged down by a multistep routine, but what does getting a lash lift actually entail? Below, the experts break it all down for us. What is a lash lift? As Gwendolyn Ogura, senior lash artist at Hairy Little Things , explains, a lash lift is a semipermanent treatment that lifts and curls your natural lashes to give you the appearance of longer, fuller lashes. It involves a two-step process where a solution is placed to set your lashes into a desired shape. The first step will soften the bonds in your lashes to alter their structure, and the second step will set them into curls.



The benefits Other than the immediate benefit of making lashes look fuller , lash lifts are ideal for those who want to cut their makeup routine in half and look as natural as possible. “[They] are great for those who like the no-makeup makeup trend, want more noticeable natural lashes, or want mascara to glide on perfectly—an all around, a low-maintenance dream,” says Clara Grider, licensed esthetician and director of education and training at Face Foundrié . A lash lift requires minimal aftercare (more on that later) and can even promote lash health overall, Ogura adds.

“[It reduces] the damage caused by frequent use of an eyelash curler,” she says. “Lash lifts are [also] a safer option for those with sensitivities or allergies. Reactions to lash-lift solutions are significantly less common compared to lash-extension adhesives.

” The possible downsides Though irritation may be less common with lash lifts, how one reacts to a treatment still varies. Grider recommends that those with extreme eye sensitivity or eye conditions consult a licensed aesthetician before booking an appointment. Ogura adds that if your lashes are short, you might be better suited for extensions.

“A lift won’t actually make them longer,” she says. Both experts emphasise the importance of going to a licensed professional for treatment, as DIY options or someone who is not properly trained may fry your lashes and cause damage. Lash lift vs extensions One treatment isn’t necessarily better than the other; it depends on your preference and desired results.

The main difference between lash extensions and a lash lift, says Grider, is that a lash lift curls your natural lashes to create that lifted look, while lash extensions use synthetic lashes to give you length and more volume for a more dramatic effect. Upkeep is also more intensive with extensions, as you may need to go back for fill-ins every two to four weeks. So it’s all about what you’re willing to put up with.

“It depends on individual preferences,” says Ogura, “and, more importantly, lifestyle.” How long does it last? Ogura says that results can last anywhere from six to eight weeks, but it’s all dependent on how quickly your lashes shed and how well you take care of them post-treatment. She explains that your lash growth cycle slows down as you age, and the slower your lash cycle is, the longer your lash lift will last.

Pre-treatment tips You’ll want to come to your appointment without any makeup on, Ogura advises. (But if you happen to show up wearing makeup, your lash technician will remove it for you.) You’ll also want to skip the eyelash curler , which can mess with your natural shape and affect the results.

Those who wear contact lenses may want to consider taking them out unless you’re comfortable closing your eyes for about an hour. What to expect during treatment While application may slightly differ depending on where you go, a lash lift generally takes about 45 minutes. During your appointment, you’ll lie down and close your eyes as your technician works.

The first step will be a cleanse with a gentle cleanser to make sure no makeup, oil, or debris will get in the way of the solution. Once the lash area is fully clean, the technician will use either a gel pad or tape to hold down the bottom lashes so they don’t interfere. Then, they hold your natural lashes up on a rod to get the perfect curl shape.

“Proper size and placement are crucial,” she says. “If positioned too far from the lash base, the lashes won’t curl properly. If too close, they may become kinked or overly lifted, which is just as bad as no lift at all.

” Next is the solution application. Lashes are lifted onto the silicone piece using water-soluble glue so that each lash is evenly coated. The lifting solution is then applied.

After a few minutes, the first solution is removed before applying the setting solution. Once it is done setting, it will be removed with cleanser and water. The technician will follow up with a conditioning treatment before being brushed out.

A final check will make sure everything is just right, and then you’re done. Aftercare tips Taking care of your lashes post-treatment is pretty easy. Grider says you’ll want to avoid water, sweat, steam, and other eye products for the first 24 to 28 hours to let the solution fully set.

Then you’ll want to brush them daily for best upkeep and consider using a lash serum between appointments. “It’s super important to condition the lashes just like you would condition your head of hair,” Grider says. “A little goes a long way.
