Home | Every state has the right to defend itself when threatened: ACDP The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) says it does not support Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza, however, it believes that every state has the right to defend itself when threatened. The party’s statement follows strong criticism for its trip to Israel . The trip, which included eleven MPs from the ACDP, the Democratic Alliance and the Patriotic Alliance has been described as a fact-finding mission.

It comes as South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice still stands. ACDP leader Reverend Kenneth Meshoe says the party supports every government’s right to exist. “We are not supporting Israel’s government, we are not supporting the state for whatever they are doing but we are very specific that we support every person and every government’s right to exist and if their existence is threatened, then they have the right to defend themselves.

The GOOD party has since voiced its concerns over what it deems as a “secret visit’, saying that this shows that these parties support Israel, which is in contradiction with the government they are part of.

Meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters says MPs who went on a trip to Israel must be summoned to appear before the Speaker of Parliament and the Joint Standing Committee on Ethics. The party also wants the lawmakers to have their diplomatic privileges suspended pending investigation. The EFF says this so-called fact-finding mission is nothing less than a betrayal of South Africans and Palestinians.
