Everton star Idrissa Gueye infiltrated the home end at Anfield to celebrate Paris Saint-Germain ’s Champions League win over Liverpool . Liverpool suffered defeat as they were knocked out in the competition’s last-16 stage by PSG on Tuesday night. The Reds scraped through the first-leg of the tie in Paris with a 1-0 win, but Ousmane Dembele’s first-half goal took the second leg to extra-time, and then to penalties.

There, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s heroics in stopping two penalties ensured an early exit for Arne Slot ’s men, despite having finished top of the Champions League’s league phase. Soaking in the occasion and Liverpool’s tears in the Anfield stands was none other than Everton ’s Gueye, who sat alongside fellow ex-Everton star Oumar Niasse and UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov. Gueye was left delighted at the expense of his local rivals, having also had another vested interest in the match thanks to his successful three seasons spent with the French champions from 2019 to 2022, prior to his return to Merseyside.

Taking to Instagram , the Senegalese midfielder posted videos of himself seated in unfamiliar territory on his story. He cheered on his former side, writing: “Incredible, what a match, go Paris,” at the end of the 90 minutes, before posting Donnarumma’s two penalty saves and thanking the Italian shot-stopper. It was a stellar performance on the night from Luis Enrique’s young PSG team, who had to beat fellow Ligue 1 side Brest in the play-offs to even progress to the last-16.

They will now play the winner of Aston Villa and Club Brugge in the last eight, while Liverpool will hope to bounce back by winning a domestic double. Meanwhile, Gueye has played an important role for Everton this season in the centre of the pitch, making 30 appearances in all competitions. Yet the 35-year-old is one of several Blues players set to be out of contract this summer.

That leaves the Toffees with a decision to make as they look to enter a new era, with David Moyes having steadied the ship since his own return to Goodison Park. Reports have claimed that Everton are keen to keep Gueye with the offer of a one-year extension despite some interest from Saudi Arabia.
