GONE are the days when a degree can guarantee a job upon graduation. According to the 2023 Centre for Future Labour Market Studies (EU-ERA) statistics, approximately 90,000 graduates in Malaysia are facing unemployment in the current job landscape. One key reason, following a survey by the Education Ministry, is the lack of skills, knowledge and attitudes sought by employers.

Recognising the evolving job market demands, UOW Malaysia has designed comprehensive programmes to provide a solid academic foundation and equip students with the practical skills and professional attitudes that employers actively seek. UOW Malaysia's holistic approach ensures students are ready for future challenges in an evolving job market. Support during transition to university life What innovative approaches does UOW Malaysia employ to ensure its graduates are job-ready and highly competitive in today's job market? Acknowledging the significant changes from secondary to tertiary education, including higher academic expectations, new personal responsibilities, and the need for effective time management, UOW Malaysia believes success begins with proper preparation.

Its pre-tertiary workshop equips graduates with the tools and confidence to excel in university and beyond. A key component of these workshops is mental health awareness, as it is crucial for academic and personal success. The transition to university life brings about significant changes and challenges, so prioritising mental health can build resilience, develop healthy coping strategies and ensure students are mentally prepared for its demands.

To help students get acquainted with the campus and foster a sense of community, UOW Malaysia will organise a campus-wide scavenger hunt before classes begin. UOW Malaysia's campus fosters a supportive environment for academic and personal growth. Empowering students with essential skills UOW Malaysia empowers its students with not just academic knowledge but also highly sought after practical skills and qualities.

They focus on developing graduate attributes through tailored workshops in the first few weeks: > Intellectual competency: students will cultivate the ability to confidently make impactful decisions through discussions, case studies and practical exercises. > Effective communication skills: this workshop will enhance clarity and persuasion in written and verbal communication. > Creative/critical thinking: this workshop will stimulate innovation and hone students’ critical analysis of complex issues.

> Entrepreneurial spirit: students will be informed of the mindset of entrepreneurs so that they can identify opportunities, take calculated risks and turn ideas into reality. > Professionalism: this workshop will instil the importance of ethics, honesty, respect, accountability and integrity in navigating ethical dilemmas. > Global mindset: this workshop will broaden horizons through exposure to diverse cultures and perspectives.

In addition to foundational workshops, the university offers career enhancement workshops tailored to specific fields such as business, culinary, computing, or communication. These workshops introduce students to industry expectations and career options. At UOW Malaysia, students can opt for a holistic educational experience that prepares them for professional achievement and personal growth.
