Enjoy local productions: Five things to do this weekend in Saskatoon, March 14-16

Take in local theatre shows, an art exhibition, a history lecture and Ukrainian Easter tradition workshop, and a local band concert.

While cold weather continues to linger on the Prairies, the local arts community is prepared to warm the heart with a variety of entertainment for all ages. presents the Circle of Voices production A Sea Most Cruel, by local playwright Liam Scramstad. When a young man’s debt-stricken mother hands him over to a fisherman, he is forced to adapt to life on the water with a crew of other young people, facing an abusive captain as natural and unnatural forces close in on the ship.

With drama, suspense and otherworldly influences, audiences will be left wondering if it was all a dream. The free-admission play opens Friday and runs to March 22 at Studio 914. Learn more at .



presents Why the Caged Bird Sings — Immersive Engagements by Cheryl L’Hirondelle. A series of drawings and songs are presented through virtual reality, video and hyper-directional audio, giving viewers an immersive experience that highlights the artist’s decades-long songwriting collaboration with the province’s incarcerated and detained populations. Running to April 17, the exhibition opens with an artist talk at the Kenderdine Gallery Friday at 12:30 p.

The presents Stories of Shevchenko, with Pavlychenko Folklorique Ensemble’s artistic director Serhij Koroliuk. Explore the life and artistry of Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko and hear insight into how his poetry captured the hearts of Ukrainians and impacted the culture. The lecture is Friday at the museum at 7 p.

The museum also presents Natural Dyes for Pysanky, for all skill levels. Make two different kinds of kryshanky — a leaf-and-flower imprinted travianka and one made with baking soda. These boiled eggs are often eaten for breakfast on Easter Sunday.

The workshop is Saturday at 1 p.m. All materials are included and no experience is needed.

presents Made in Italy by Farren Timoteo. This semi-biographical comedic play is a love letter to family, culture and the Italian-Canadian experience. An Italian family in Alberta in the 1970s explores the generational differences between a traditionalist father and his teenage son who, aspiring to be a pop-icon, feels caught between two worlds.
