The ED raided Chennai properties of Gokulam Gopalan, producer of Mohanlal's L2: Empuraan, which faces criticism for allegedly negative portrayal of right-wing politics. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday raided Chennai properties of Gokulam Gopalan, who is one of the producers of Mohanlal’s recently released movie, L2: Empuraan . As reported by the Indian Express, details of the ED raids have not been disclosed as of now.
However, it should be noted that Gopalan has one of the leading firms in his name called Sree Gokulam Chits and Finance. This firm has stakes in several sectors including hospitality, media, health, education, transport and logistics. Interestingly, ED raids come at a time when L2: Empuraan is also being criticised by a section of people for allegedly portraying right-wing politics as “villainous.
" Due to the ongoing controversy, it was recently reported that the makers of Empuraan have decided to make 17 cuts to the film. Besides this, some dialogues from the film will also be muted. The name of the Villan, Baba Bajrangi, will also be changed.
Previously, Mohanlal also reacted to the controversy and expressed “regret". Later, the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) also came out in support of Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran amid the backlash. “We welcome criticism of the film’s form and content without any compromises.
Only through constructive criticism can an art form truly evolve. However, we firmly believe that criticism should not descend into personal attacks, threats, or branding, regardless of political or religious affiliations," a part of FEFKA’s statement read. Starring Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead, L2: Empuraan is a political action thriller film.
Helmed by Prithviraj himself, it is the sequel to the 2019 hit Malayalam film Lucifer. Jointly produced by Antony Perumbavoor and Gokulam Gopalan under the banners of Aashirvad Cinemas Pvt Ltd and Sree Gokulam Movies, the film features an ensemble cast including Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Abhimanyu Singh and Suraj Venjaramoodu in significant roles..
