” This underscores the importance of ag­riculture to any nation. It is at the heart of the prosperity of any nation. Unfortunately, agriculture took the back seat the moment Nigeria discovered crude oil.



However, as important as it is, our youth seem to be averse to anything agriculture. Perhaps, it is to get the youth interested and involved in agriculture that the gov­ernment came up with what is known as the Green Money Project. It is a government initiative designed to empower Nigerian youth in sustainable agriculture.

Backed by the Office of the Special As­sistant to the President on Agriculture, the project aims to enhance food security and drive agricultural growth in Nigeria by engaging young people in the sector. It forms part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ on agri­culture, focusing on food security through increased youth participation. The main objectives of the project in­clude to reposition agriculture and make it a viable and lucrative venture for the Ni­gerian youth; to improve food security by contributing to sustainable food security using unemployed youth as a tool for trans­formation; and increase productivity by enhancing productivity, innovation, and market access for agriculture in Nigeria.

How Does The Green Money Project Work? The project provides training and ca­pacity training programmes in sustain­able agricultural practices, entrepreneur­ship, and business management. It facilitates access to finance and re­sources for youth-led agricultural enter­prises. It connects youth farmers to markets and provides support for value chain development, offers mentorship and net­working opportunities for youth farmers to learn from experienced farmers and industry experts.

Strategies The Green Money Project employs sev­eral strategies and activities to achieve its objectives. The project develops and implements training programmes in sustainable ag­riculture practices, entrepreneurship, and business management; establishes farm to showcase best practices in sustainable agriculture and provide hands-on training for youth farmers. It partners with financial institutions to provide access to finance for youth-led agricultural enterprises; and establishes partnerships with buyers and processors to connect youth farmers to markets and provide support for value chain develop­ment.

It also provides mentorship and net­working opportunities for youth farmers to learn from experienced farmers and industry experts. Outcomes It is expected that the project would increase the number of Nigerian youth participating in sustainable agriculture and agribusiness; improve agricultural productivity and efficiency among youth farmers. The project is also expected to increase income and revenue for youth-led agricul­tural enterprises, create jobs and employ­ment opportunities in the agricultural sector for the Nigerian youth.

It would contribute to Nigeria’s food security and economic growth through sustainable agriculture practices. Eligibility To qualify to participate in the pro­gramme one must be between age 18 – 40, must be a Nigerian citizen or permanent resident and must have attained a mini­mum of secondary school education. Other requirements are that one must be a resident in any of the 36 states of Ni­geria or the Federal Capital Territory and have a demonstrable interest or experi­ence in agriculture or agribusiness Application To apply to participate or benefit from the Green Money Project: Visit the Website.
