From her first-ever single release to selling out stadiums, this film covers the build-up to Billie Eilish ’s teenage stardom and the complications that came along the way. Now a household name, Billie Eilish, aged 23, released her documentary Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry back in 2021. The film details the years that led up to her becoming a Grammy winner, and it’s not all that it seems.
Throughout the film, Billie is very open about her mental health struggles, Tourette's, and the extreme pressures she and her music producer, Finneas, were put under. Viewers gain further insight into the singer’s life with Tourette’s as she shows ‘attacks’ and extreme tics backstage and at photoshoots. One viewer took to Rotten Tomatoes to write a raving review.
They said: “Seeing this very young and talented person struggle through so much breaks my heart.” While another added: “This is the most intense, realistic, and emotional artist documentary fathomable.” The documentary digs deep into Billie’s personal diary entries as she reflects on some of her darkest times.
She opens up about self-harming as a teenager and that she was "locking herself in a bathroom” to make herself bleed because she “thought she deserved it.” These dark themes struck a nerve with many fans. “Billie wrestles with deep, dark demons,” a review reads.
“Yet, with her brother's and parents support, she manages to become an international superstar. It's hard to imagine how anyone copes with it, but this film gives us a glimpse.” For those that aren’t familiar with how Billie rose to fame, The World’s A Little Blurry definitely provides all of the answers.
From the early days of songwriting with her brother to the preparation for the release of her debut album, the documentary covers it all in great detail. Another emotional moment captured in this film was when Billie met her idol, Justin Bieber, for the first time. Scenes in the film go as far back as the pop star's childhood as she and her family reminisce on her love for him and even shows her crying as she reads a text from Bieber.
“Seeing Justin Bieber comfort her, he knew the pain she was going through.” A viewer wrote. “I never thought much of that guy, but I could see the understanding in his eyes as he hugged Billie as she sobbed.
“It made me tear up. We take these beautiful and bright talents, crush them under the weight of admiration and attention until they turn to diamond or they get crushed.” Another fan wrote: “It was great! And the segments of her with Justin really touched my heart.
I know exactly how she felt when meeting him; I've experienced the same thing, and I started bawling, tapping into the magical feeling again.” Overall the film is two hours and 12 minutes long, which one person describes as a “risky runtime.” Another review states: “None of this proves either immediately satisfying or cinematically impressive enough to justify the film's extended 140-minute runtime.
” Whether you’re a fan of Billie wanting to learn more or are curious to know how the pop sensation came to be, Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry is available to watch on both Amazon prime and Apple TV..
