Emmanuel Macron has appointed Francois Bayrou as France's new prime minister following Michel Barnier's resignation. Mr Bayrou, a centrist politician, met with the French President at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Friday morning. The appointment comes after the previous Prime Minister Michel Barnier failed to force through a budget.
He then lost a vote of no confidence, forcing Mr Macron to form a new government. The defeat was historic as it was the first time a French government had lost a confidence vote since 1962. Mr Barnier had only been in the role for three months, making him the the shortest-serving prime minister in France's modern history.
France has been in a state of political deadlock for months. Mr Macron tried to break this in June when he called a snap parliamentary election. However, the result only reinforced the impasse as the left-wing New Popular Front alliance became the biggest party but no party was able to secure a majority.
Mr Bayrou has been a strong ally of President Macron's since he came to office in 2017. The new Prime Minister, 73, has been in French politics for 40 years and runs the Modern Party. In his twenties, Mr Bayrou was a classical languages teacher.
He later went on to serve as France's education minister from 1993 to 1997. He served as Mr Macron's justice minister in 2017 but was forced to resign after being implicated in a party funding scandal. Mr Bayrou has also ran for the presidency on three occasions and came third in 2007.
