Public Health Scotland (PHS) is encouraging people offered a Covid vaccine this spring to get vaccinated. The health body said this is important because "Covid hasn’t disappeared." Last summer, Scotland recorded more than 10,000 Covid cases and over 4,000 hospitalisations.

The spring vaccination programme will run until June 30. It aims to protect those most vulnerable to Covid, including older adults in care homes, people aged 75 and over, and those with weakened immune systems. Dr Sam Ghebrehewet, head of immunisation and vaccination at PHS, said: "Being vaccinated is the safest and most effective way for older people and those with certain underlying conditions to protect themselves against Covid-19.

"You get your strongest protection from the vaccine in the first three months after getting it. "Over time, this protection gradually fades so, even if you had your winter vaccination, it’s important to get another dose this spring to reinforce your immunity and help keep you safe. "Getting vaccinated could mean the difference between a mild illness and a hospital stay.

" Eligible individuals will be invited by letter, email, or text message, based on their selected communication preference. Appointments can be rescheduled using the online portal or the National Vaccination Helpline at 0800 030 8013. PHS has said that if people have been invited for a Covid vaccination this spring, it is because experts know that their age or health condition means they are at higher risk of becoming seriously ill from Covid.
