
An elephant was electrocuted to death in the Somoschura area in Sherpur's Nalitabari upazila on Thursday night. Police yesterday arrested Ziaur Rahman, 35, a farmer of Somoschura area, for laying out electric wire. He was produced before a Sherpur court this afternoon which sent him to jail, said Md Dewan Ali, ranger of Madhutila Range in Nalitabari.
Quoting locals, Dewan said an elephant was electrocuted when a herd of wild elephants were on a paddy field at Somoschura area. Suddenly, an elephant came in contact with an electric wire set up by Ziaur Rahman to save his paddy field. The elephant died on the spot around 10:00pm.
