Elderly Woman murdered

Chennai: A 70-year-old woman, living alone, was found murdered at her home near Kalpakkam in Chengalpet district on Monday night. Her throat was slit, and two sovereigns of gold jewellery were missing. Kanniyammal lived alone on Periyapalayathamman Street in Bommarajapuram village.

Her husband, Kannan, a retired employee of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research in Kalpakkam, died 10 years ago. The couple had five children who are married and live separately. She ran an eatery in Bommarajapuram and was managing her expenses.



On Monday, she closed her business around 2 PM and went home. By 9 PM, a neighbour noticed her house was locked. The neighbour tried to call Kanniyammal but received no answer.

She called Kanniyammal's grandson, who requested her to check inside the house. The neighbour, who found the door bolted from the outside, found Kanniyammal dead. The Sadurangapattinam police , who were alerted about the murder, arrived with sniffer dogs and fingerprint experts.

Relatives told police her jewellery was missing. Police registered a case of murder. Kanniyammal's body was sent to Chengalpet govt hospital for an autopsy.

Police are questioning neighbours and reviewing recent visitors to the victim's home. A search is underway for the suspects involved in the murder..
