An eight-year-old boy is helping to save dogs from the meat trade in China by taking on a charity swimming challenge.

Jack will swim 60 metres per week throughout April to raise money for Candy’s Hound Rescue. The charity regularly goes to China to save dogs from the meat trade, but Kerry Lawrence, the charity's owner, relies on public donations to carry out the work. Last year, Jack managed to raise more than £1,200 for Candy’s Hound Rescue by walking his whippet, Scoop, for 30 miles over the course of a month.

He wanted to raise money for the charity again this year, and so far has collected £55 towards his £200 target through a . He said: "I'm raising money in aid of Candy's Hound Rescue International and every donation will help. "Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.

" Greyhounds and whippets are exported to China from the UK, Ireland, and Australia to be bred for use on underground race tracks. However, if they cannot race or become to old, they end up in the meat trade. Most of the dogs the charity rescues have severe injuries and illnesses as a result of mistreatment.

After ensuring the animals receive the medical treatment they need, the charity finds them new homes in the UK, US, or elsewhere in Europe..
