With new models popping up every other day, it is helpful to understand both streams of thought and take a clear, informed stance. Effective Accelerationism, known as e/acc for short, emerged around 2022 as a tech-optimist movement that's gained significant traction in Silicon Valley and beyond, at its core, e/acc advocates for rapid, unfettered technological advancement . If you've ever heard someone say "progress is inevitable" or "regulation just slows innovation," you're hearing echoes of e/acc thinking.



This philosophy rests on several key beliefs: Technology as Destiny : E/acc supporters view technological progress as an unstoppable force – like gravity – that shouldn't be impeded. Opportunity, Not Risk : Where others see danger in advanced AI, e/acc sees humanity's greatest opportunity – a chance to solve our biggest problems and transcend current limitations. Tech investor Marc Andreessen captured this spirit in his " Techno-Optimist Manifesto ," declaring: "We believe technology is how we create a better future, a future of abundance, a future of wonder, a future in which humanity's potential is fully realized.

" Standing in contrast is p rosocial AI – a framework that puts human and planetary welfare at the center of technological development. By definition, Prosocial AI systems are "tailored, trained, tested, and targeted to bring out the best in and for people and planet." Their implementation is a win-win-win-win for the humans we are, the communities we belong to, the countries we are part of and the planet we depend on.

Imagine if the AI systems we're building were designed not just to be smart but to be wise – reflecting our highest values rather than just our technical capabilities. Prosocial AI embodies this ambition through several core principles: Human Agency Matters : Prosocial AI starts with human agency – our ability to make meaningful technological choices. This approach values awareness (understanding what's happening), appreciation (recognizing different perspectives), acceptance (acknowledging reality while working to improve it), and accountability (taking responsibility for outcomes).

We Shape Our Tools. Then They Shape Us : Perhaps the most profound insight from the Prosocial approach is summed up in this straightforward truth: "We cannot expect the technology of tomorrow to be better than the humans of today." In other words, AI will reflect our values – for better or worse.
