The Edmonton International Airport celebrates the reopening of the newly renovated departure ramp and roadway on Wednesday morning. The 295-metre-long roadway beside the terminal closed down for renovation and has been under construction for 13 months. “It’s been a long road to get here and it’s a monumental moment for the team who worked so hard to bring the project to where we are today,” said Peter Agnew, the infrastructure, facilities, and airside operations vice president.
The newly renovated roadway includes some accessibility and safety enhancements such as roadway lighting and bollards. As well as some aesthetic features like the new mural. “So there were a lot of repairs and renovations required as well as the improvements to widening the departures, so we got on early with the airport and RJC to work on solutions to obviously get it done ahead of schedule,” said Ian McKinnon, the civil operations manager with PCL Construction.
During the construction of the ramp, the airport opened a temporary ‘Arrivals Free’ area for quick pickup and drop-off. Despite the opening of the new departure lane, Edmonton Airport received positive feedback from passengers about this specific drop-off area, in which they have decided to keep the area open for Edmontonians..
