I just absolutely love the holiday season in Charleston. There are so many ways to make special memories with your family. Sometimes I catch a case of Holiday FOMO because I want to do all the fun activities but our social schedule fills up fast between school parties, work parties, winter sports and traveling.
But we still make time for our favorite local events, including going to Night of a Thousand Candles at Brookgreen Gardens and the Holiday Festival of Lights on James Island. Last year was the first time we went to Aquarium Aglow at the South Carolina Aquarium, and it was simply awesome! I highly recommend this experience, and we can’t wait to go back this year. I enjoy taking my daughter to see “The Nutcracker” and our whole family enjoys going downtown to see the gorgeous displays at The Charleston Place, Marion Square, Hotel Bennett, and at The Cistern at the College of Charleston.
Getting a real Christmas tree is part of our family tradition, and then we decorate it together with the beloved ornaments we’ve collected over the years while watching a Christmas movie. We also take time to honor my husband’s Jewish heritage by lighting the menorah during the eight nights of Chanukah. In this edition of Lowcountry Parent magazine, we look at how some local families incorporate unique traditions into their celebrations (page 16) and offer yummy recipes for appetizers that kids and adults will enjoy during festive parties (page 20).
Our calendar contains a listing of upcoming holiday-themed events (page 30), and our annual gift guide (page 24) features wonderful local gift ideas for the whole family. At our house, we continue the tradition of welcoming back our elf, Chippitt, and trying to find where he ends up in the morning after his journey home from the North Pole each night. We thought it would be fun to share some of Chippitt’s adventures, and include some other cute elf photos from readers on page 40.
I wish for a sparkly holiday season for all of our readers, and express my gratitude for your continued support and enthusiasm for our publication over the past year.
