The week in visual commentary.

A 14-year-old boy armed with an assault-style rifle opened fire Wednesday at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, killing two students and two teachers and wounding nine others. The teen’s father also was arrested and charged with allowing his son to have access to the weapon. In the editorial cartoon gallery’s lead image, Michael Ramirez depicts a grieving Uncle Sam asking “Why?” Subsequent cartoons by Nick Anderson and Bill Bramhall answer the question by showing examples of the nation’s permissive gun culture.

Mike Luckovich draws a flowery “Thoughts and Prayers,” a familiar refrain after school shootings. Steve Breen riffs on the familiar “school crossing” road sign. In other news, the only scheduled televised debate between presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris is scheduled for Tuesday on ABC.

Ahead of the debate, the candidates are using campaign appearances to defend their records. Dana Summers and Joey Weatherford note Harris’s reluctance to sit for interviews or conduct a press conference. Walt Handelsman highlights Trumo’s shifting views on a Florida abortion law, while Weatherford comments on Harris’s role in border policy.

Drew Sheneman addresses the furor over the Trump campaign’s filming of a political ad at Arlington National Cemetery. Other topics covered in this week’s editorial cartoon roundup include the intrusiveness of “tipping culture”; the killing by Hamas of six Israeli hostages being held in Gaza; and Labor Day. Cartoons were drawn by Jack Ohman, Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Walt Handelsman, Phil Hands, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
