“I’m so hangry I might cry” dinged the message from my sister as I clambered out of the car in the direction of Gill St Deli. If there is one thing you can count on in my large family, it’s that someone is always going to be hungry and that it’s about to be everyone else’s problem if it’s not solved, stat. It’s always a scary time when several stomachs are rumbling in unison.
Luckily for my sister, not to mention those in her close vicinity, the delightful Mosman Park cafe that I’m picking our lunch up from caters for take-away — all meals are served in easy-to-cart cardboard bowls. No tears will be shed on my watch. Gill St reopened with new owners Charlie and Tarsh Galbally, who also have the excellent Pep’s Wine Bar, in June with a new look, menu and offering.
Its welcoming facade with touches of matcha green feel inviting from the moment you step through. I’m welcomed with a friendly hello and met with shelves of deli goods, many of them local. Knowing time is of the essence, I order from the cabinet, which is stocked with pre-made wraps, sandwiches, sweets and salads.
Nothing satiates hangry like carbs, so I grab a long roll layered with ham, melted cheese and a decent amount of pickles ($15), the kind of healthy but not TOO healthy chicken sandwich I crave at least once a week ($15), a slice of pan de lima (a lime loaf cake, $7) and some pumpkin bread ($9) for another sister who is gluten-free. I’m very popular when I arrive home with my basket of goodies, which also includes a green and orange Pressed Earth juice ($9 each). The ham number is the standout, a classic pairing with the right amount of salty ham, creamy cheese and acidic slices of pickles.
The chicken sanga — tasty chook mixed with mayo and herbs — with fresh salad is also good, though the bread doesn’t feel as fresh as it might if it was made to order. Someday Coffee Co does my favourite pumpkin bread in Perth, but this one comes a close second. It is a tasty option for gluten-free folk.
The cake has a hint of citrus and isn’t too sweet, which as someone without a keen sweet tooth is welcomed. Gill St Cafe is an excellent spot to peruse, sit or grab something very quickly if you too have the hangry gene in your family. 13 Gill St, Mosman Park OPEN Mon-Fri, 7am-4pm, Sat & Sun, 7am-2pm BOOKINGS No THE VERDICT A welcoming community cafe in the ‘burbs of Mosman Park with tasty and speedy classics to go.

Eating Out restaurant review: Gill St Cafe dishing quick meals in welcoming digs
The venue reopened with new owners, a new look and a new menu. But are the pricey cabinet offerings worth your money?
