DRIVERS have been given a golden chance to clear old traffic ticket debts — but they’ll need to act fast.Under a new city program, late fees and penalties on eligible parking and traffic tickets can be wiped clean as long as the original fine is paid in full by June 30.GettyAll it takes is one step: pay the original fine.
If the ticket qualifies, the added fees will vanish[/caption]The limited-time offer is part of Chicago’s Vehicle Violation Debt Relief Program, and it applies to tickets from 2023 or earlier. The city isn’t forgiving the actual ticket, but it is erasing extra charges like late penalties, collection fees, boot and tow costs, and more, in most cases. All it takes is one step: pay the original fine.
If the ticket qualifies, the added fees will vanish.“You’ll still need to pay the base fine,” the city clarified online. “But penalties and fees can be dropped.
”Pretty much everyone is eligible, no income requirements, no complicated forms. If your ticket falls under categories like parking, standing, expired registration, city sticker violations, red light or speed cameras, you’re likely in.But not everything qualifies.
Expired parking meter tickets are excluded, as are any cases that have gone to court or into formal collections. Also, if your car’s been impounded, you can still get the ticket fees cleared but not the release, tow, or storage charges. Those must still be paid.
“Don’t wait,” says mayor.“This is your chance for a fresh start,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson in a press conference this week. “So, do not wait.
”Drivers have until Monday, June 30, 2025, to take advantage. Payments can be made online or in person at a City of Chicago Payment Center.Alongside the relief program, Chicago also switched on 16 new speed cameras on April 1.
They’re already issuing warnings, and are part of a planned rollout of 50 cameras across the city this year.So if you’re behind on tickets, now’s your chance to clear the slate before more fines start rolling in.GettyIf your ticket falls under categories like parking, standing, expired registration, city sticker violations, red light or speed cameras, you’re likely in[/caption].
