THE Okapa community NCD Governor’s Easter Cup is all set for the annual challenge at the Gerehu Sports Centre. Chairman and former top rugby league referee Tony Kuni yesterday confirmed that the Okapa community from the Eastern Highlands residing in NCD are all geared for the three-day event to be staged on April 18, 20 and 21. As usual the men will play rugby league and the women in soccer.

Kuni said the 10 teams set to participate are Pom Hawks, Uliano Sharks, Panthers, Badili Tigers, Muruks, TK Maroons, Nege Warriors, Karupi Brothers, Harve and Eels. Kuni said: “Last year’s winner in the rugby league in Karupi Brothers in the A grade will be defending their title. “They are 8-Mile based.

“While in the B grade, last year’s winner POM Hawks from the Gerehu suburb are also keen to retain their title as well,” Kuni added. He further said the women’s title holders in Yasubi from the Morata suburb are also returning to stake their claim again. Kuni said this annual tournament has been running since 1984.

“It is usually self-funded, but a few times we have had support from our good Governor Powes Parkop. “But as yet no support has come and we hope any business houses or our Okapa MP Saki Soloma or other Eastern Highlands MPs can consider our call for assistance as well. “This is for a good cause as we will also be conducting awareness to our young men and women on minimising crime and the ill effects of drugs and alcohol in our communities throughout NCD,” Kuni added.

There is total prizemoney of K10,000.If anyone is willing to assist please contact Tony Kuni on Ph.72419233.
