Hessle Epilepsy Charity Shop has bought ten machines to hand out

A charity shop that has been offering support to people with epilepsy for 50 years has announced its latest gesture. Hessle Epilepsy Charity Shop, in Tower Hill, Hessle, has bought ten special sleeping monitors, each worth £1,200, with funds. It is now appealing to anyone with epilepsy to get in touch if they feel the machine could help them – and they will be given one, completely free of charge.

Steve Green, manager at the shop, said: “We are donating the monitors to people who are suffering with epilepsy and might need one. All we need is proof from their doctor that they have epilepsy. “We have just given one of the monitors to a family who have a severely disabled son.

They have a holiday home and every time they go, they have to dismantle the monitor they have to take with them. “Now, they will be able to take this one with them when they go and leave it set up.” The SAMi-3 kit includes an infrared camera that monitors sleep activity for caregivers and parents who need to watch for abnormal movement at night in children and adults.

All the money raised at the charity shop – it totals over £500,000 in the time it has been in existence – is used to help people in the East Yorkshire area who have epilepsy and has helped to buy equipment for Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital , for example. “We have an amazing team of volunteers,” said Steve.

“Our oldest will be 92 in June.” Anyone who could benefit from one of the sleeping monitor kits can contact the shop, at 2a Tower Hill, Hessle, HU13 0SP, call 01482 648295, providing proof of their epilepsy diagnosis from their GP. Don't miss a thing.
