The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins got off to a fast start, scoring three unanswered first period goals in a 5-2 win at Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon. The Penguins completed three games in three days, going 2-1 after Saturday night’s win at home over Springfield. The Penguins picked up four of a possible six points over the weekend.
With the win, the Penguins are now 39-22-7-1 overall and 17-13-5 on the road. With Providence idle, the Penguins moved into third-place in the Atlantic Division with 86 points. First things first Gabe Klassen got the Penguins on the board in the first period with his first career AHL goal.
The assists went to Logan Pietila (1) and Zach Gallant (3). The goal came at 6:36. Nolan Renwick then scored his second of the season for the Penguins at 12:24 to make it 2-0.
Dan Renouf (11) and Mathias Laferriere (12) got the assists. Gallant made it 3-0 when he scored his first of the season at 16:16. Jack St.
Ivany (15) and Owen Pickering (11) got the assists. Bridgeport had 11 shots on goal in the first period, while the Penguins had eight. Second helping Bridgeport scored the first goal of the second period on the power play at 4:25 when Gleb Veremyev scored his first of the season to make it a 3-1 game.
The assists went to Liam Foudy (22) and Calle Odelius (13). The Islanders made it a one-goal game at 19:34 when Ross Mitton scored his first of the season. The assists went to Jack Randl (5) and Max Dorrington (1).
Third time around Atley Calvert gave the Penguins a 4-2 lead when he scored his eighth of the season at 13:44. Sam Poulin (23) and Tristan Broz (16) had the assists. Avery Hayes put the game away with an empty net goal at 19:11.
It was his 22nd goal of the season. Sam Poulin was credited with the assist. The men in the box Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s Tristan Broz was called for the only penalty of the first period.
He received two minutes for tripping at 17:19. Each team was called for one penalty in the second period. The Penguins were down a man at 2:53 when Chase Stillman got two minutes for holding the stick.
Bridgeport’s Cam Thiesing got two minutes for tripping at 13:31. Jack St. Ivany got two minutes for delay of game at 5:10.
The Penguins went on the power play for the second time of the game at 15:34 when Bridgeport’s Isaiah George got two minutes for hooking. Between the pipes Sergei Murashov started in goal for the Penguins and made 30 saves on 32 shots. It is Murashov’s 12th win this season.
T.J. Semptimphelter started for Bridgeport and made 18 saves on 22 shots.
Power up The Penguins went 0 for 2 on the power play while Bridgeport was 1 of 3. The stars come out The third star of the game went to Bridgeport’s Ross Mitton with one goal. The Penguins were awarded the next two stars.
