Pratapgarh: Three policemen, including a deputy superintendent of police, were among half a dozen people who were injured in stone pelting by a mob that went berserk while protesting over the suspicious death of a 22-year-old woman in Pratapgarh on Friday. The protesters alleged that the woman, who worked at a multi-speciality hospital in Durgaganj for the past 4 years, was raped and murdered by a fellow staff. The mob resorted to violence when police tried to take the body for autopsy.

Police said the woman arrived at the hospital at around 6pm on Thursday for her duty. However, around 8 pm, her mother received a call from the hospital claiming that her daughter's condition was serious. The mother told police when she, along with a neighbour reached the hospital, the staff didn't allow them to enter and claimed that they had sent the body to their house in Adharganj in an ambulance.

When the police came to know about the incident, they rushed to the spot and asked the family to submit their complaint. On Friday morning, the family members, along with supporters, arrived near the hospital and staged a massive protest while placing the body on the road. Police rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the agitators.

When they tried to take the body for post-mortem, the locals started pelting the police team with stones, leaving half a dozen people, including policemen, injured. The cops had to use mild force to disperse the agitators. SP (Pratapgarh) Anil Kumar told TOI that a probe was on, and action would be initiated accordingly.

"The family members have submitted an application to the police station concerned, levelling charges against five people, including a woman, accusing them of killing their daughter. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Videography of the postmortem will be conducted by a panel of doctors.

Police have also detained three persons for questioning," he said. Stay updated with the latest city news , Air Quality Index (AQI), and weather updates for major cities like Delhi , Mumbai , Noida , and Bangalore on Times of India ..
