The rapid growth of battery-powered technologies like electric vehicles has created significant environmental challenges: battery waste, resource scarcity, and inefficient recycling processes. NOWOS, Europe’s leader in lithium-ion battery repair and maintenance, tackles these issues by refurbishing and recycling used batteries, recovering valuable materials, and promoting a circular economy—reducing waste, conserving resources, and lowering the carbon footprint of battery production.Today, the company announced the successful closing of a €6 million equity funding round, led by Impact Venture Fund Shift4Good, with participation from Dutch investors Fair Capital Impact Fund and Goeie Grutten Impact Fund.

An additional €3 million in debt financing is currently being raised. With the new funding, NOWOS plans to open repair hubs in Poland (2025) and Germany (2026) to support growing European demand. The company will also invest in developing a Battery Passport system and scaling repair protocols for more battery types and use cases.

This funding supports NOWOS’s ambition to build a European-wide infrastructure for battery repair, tracking, and reuse.Speaking to TFN, Alix Armour, Chief Impact Officer of NOWOS, shared: “We’re investing in internal IT infrastructure, automation tools, and proprietary testing equipment to enhance the repair process while increasing our R&D budget to develop innovative repair techniques and testing tools — all focused on improving operational processes.”Embracing the circular Economy for lithium-ion batteriesIn the Netherlands, NOWOS was co-founded in March 2019 by Ambre Eppler, Prins Doornekamp, Jan Bartels, and Steven Bradshaw.

The company operates facilities in the Netherlands, France, and England. The co-founders identified a growing need for professional battery repair services, particularly lithium-ion batteries in micromobility industries like bicycles and scooters. After observing inefficiencies in battery disposal and recycling processes, they set out to extend battery lifespans and promote a circular economy.

“We founded NOWOS as a social enterprise, embedding environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles at our core. Our mission is to build a circular economy for lithium-ion batteries that reduces waste and carbon emissions while remaining profitable for all stakeholders. From customers and employees to partners and investors, we believe sustainability and economic value can go hand in hand,” commented Armour.

NOWOS’s mission is to create a circular economy for lithium-ion batteries that reduces waste, conserves resources, minimises carbon emissions, and remains economically viable for all stakeholders. The company aligns with the European Green Deal and contributes to sustainable mobility solutions.Market reaction: 310,000 kilograms of 98 different battery models repaired in 2024Since launching in 2019, NOWOS has initially focused on micro-mobility: repairing batteries for e-bikes, e-mopeds, and kick-scooters.

Their pioneering European customers include vehicle manufacturers and fleet operators such as Dott, Felyx, and Qwic from the Netherlands; Dance in Germany and France; Fifteen in France; and Chinese manufacturers NIU, Phylion, TWS, and Segway-Ninebot—all demonstrating dedication to sustainability and collaboration.NOWOS has grown into a leading specialist in repairing and maintaining lithium-ion batteries. The new funding will help expand operations into additional sectors: material handling equipment (e.

g., forklifts and AGVs), energy storage systems (ESS), power tools, garden electronics, automated drones, robotics, and medical devices. In 2024 alone, the company repaired 310,000 kilograms of 98 different battery models — equivalent to 90,000 batteries.

Doornekamp explains: “This funding not only recognises our work but also gives us resources to accelerate our mission: making battery repair and reuse the standard across Europe. We especially want to acknowledge our customers—those who’ve trusted and worked with us in this complex, rapidly evolving space since the beginning.”The round’s lead investor, Shift4Good, is a global impact venture capital fund based in Paris and Singapore, dedicated to sustainable transportation.

For Doornekamp, partnering with Shift4Good transcends capital: “We’re gaining a mission-aligned investor with deep knowledge of transportation and circular economy sectors. Their strategic support, network, and shared vision give us a powerful platform to scale, innovate, and lead in this rapidly evolving industry. This partnership creates long-term impact.

”Shift4Good’s founder, Yann Marteil, confirmed: “The circular economy is becoming a standalone sector, especially within transportation — a major consumer of raw materials and manufactured goods. The investment and partnership with NOWOS present a unique opportunity to support solutions that reduce waste, extend product life, and preserve critical resources. We believe their B2B model, with large clients at its core, is the right approach to structure the market.

Their localised repair facilities are especially compelling, allowing adaptation to local needs and client-specific constraints — key factors in this space.”NOWOS approach: repair instead of replacementSpeaking about competition, Armour told us: “Several battery repair businesses operate in the market, some focusing on B2B and others on B2C, serving various segments. It’s a rapidly growing space with significant gaps between first use and recycling, creating room for multiple contributors.

As the current market leader, we differentiate ourselves through high-volume repairs for battery and vehicle OEMs. Most battery OEMs approve us and work directly with them, positioning us uniquely in the value chain. We maintain an extensive database with knowledge of over 98 different battery models.

We also collaborate with others across the value chain—those involved in dismantling, repurposing cells and cell packs, and recycling. Operating at the start of battery maintenance and reuse, we strive to integrate with each stage. Ultimately, we share a common mission: extending battery life, reducing waste, adding value to the supply chain, and improving our planet’s condition.

”“NOWOS leads in sustainable battery solutions by extending battery lifespans and reducing waste. They emphasise repair’s importance in transitioning toward a circular economy. Their pioneering position and ability to scale across Europe align perfectly with our impact-driven investment approach,” concluded Marije Schasfoort, impact investor at Fair Capital Impact FundThe post Dutch NOWOS lands €6M to transform battery repair industry in Europe appeared first on Tech Funding News.
