The Dutch Ministry of Defense is warning of a critical shortage of new commandos, with only 14 recruits joining the elite ranks this year compared to the annual requirement of 40, according to . The shortage raises concerns about the operational readiness of the Netherlands' special forces. “This is insufficient,” said Colonel Huub Smeets, commander of the Dutch Commando Corps, in an interview with .

“What is happening in the world demands a strong operational force. A well-staffed organization is crucial since these men are deployed worldwide for critical missions.” In recent years, recruitment figures have fluctuated but have remained below the necessary threshold.

The Commando Corps welcomed 24 new operators in 2022, followed by 31 in 2023. However, the sharp decline to 14 this year has sparked alarm. On average, the corps loses 15 operators annually due to retirement or other departures, meaning the current intake fails to sustain the required numbers.

Both Colonel Smeets and State Secretary of Defense Gijs Tuinman, himself a former commando, have ruled out lowering the rigorous standards for the commando training program as a solution to the shortfall. “Reducing the difficulty of the program is not an option,” said Smeets. “That would put people in danger.

” Tuinman echoed this stance: “We certainly will not lower the requirements. The biggest misconception is that being a commando is all about physical strength. It’s mental resilience that counts.

” Despite the drop in new recruits, defense officials expressed hope that the shortage is temporary. According to the ministry, there has been a renewed interest in applications, though it remains unclear how many of these candidates will successfully complete the demanding training process..
