Dubai: The UAE Ministry of Interior has released eye-opening statistics for 2024, revealing a concerning trend in road safety across Dubai. A staggering 2,070,338 radar violations were recorded throughout the year, shedding light on ongoing challenges with driver behaviour and traffic law adherence. These figures highlight the growing need for increased road safety measures and improved public awareness.

Leading causes of traffic accidents The statistics also shed light on the leading causes of accidents in the city. Sudden lane changes topped the list, contributing to 676 accidents. Close behind was the failure to maintain a safe distance, which resulted in 518 accidents.

These figures highlight the critical importance of following basic driving principles, such as ensuring enough space between vehicles to prevent collisions. Radar violations The most alarming figure comes from the radar violations, with over 2 million instances of drivers exceeding speed limits by more than 30km/h. This serves as a strong reminder of the importance of adhering to speed limits for the safety of all road users.

The radar violations were followed by improper parking, which accounted for 154,948 instances, and failure to obey traffic signs and road regulations, resulting in 129,263 violations. This data reflects a growing trend of non-compliance with road safety laws. Authorities are working to address these issues through awareness campaigns and targeted interventions.

Other violations Other violations also raised concerns in 2024. For instance, 95 drivers were caught operating their vehicles during foggy conditions despite official warnings, putting themselves and others at risk. Running red lights was another common violation, with 34,542 recorded instances.

Distracted driving continues to be a major issue, with 87,321 drivers caught using mobile phones behind the wheel — an activity known to significantly increase the likelihood of accidents. Traffic obstruction was another area of concern, with 87,194 instances of vehicles blocking roads. Additionally, 64,233 drivers were caught not wearing seat belts, while 63,156 violations were recorded for speeding by up to 50km/h.

Other notable infractions included 60,367 drivers turning in unauthorised areas and 35,233 pedestrians crossing roads at non-designated points. Key causes of accidents The Ministry of Interior data revealed that negligence and lack of attention were primary factors behind many accidents. Reckless driving behaviours, such as running red lights, speeding, and failing to yield to other road users, also played significant roles.

Additionally, dangerous actions like reversing unsafely, overtaking in restricted zones, and general reckless driving were all identified as major contributors to accidents. Efforts to improve road safety The Dubai Police General Command, through the General Traffic Department, has launched a series of proactive measures to improve road safety. Traffic awareness campaigns have been rolled out to educate the public about the importance of safe driving and the consequences of traffic violations.

These initiatives aim not only to reduce the number of accidents, especially the more severe ones, but also to foster a culture of road safety across the community. By focusing on education and prevention, Dubai authorities hope to encourage greater compliance with traffic laws and, ultimately, reduce accidents and fatalities on the roads.
