Dry Day notified in Tapi district of dry Gujarat

Surat: A public notification issued by the Tapi district administration declared a "Dry Day" for the 48 hours until polling ends on Nov 20 for the Maharashtra legislative assembly election . The restriction will also be in force on counting day, Nov 23. Senior Tapi district officials said they issued the notification according to guidelines from the election commission.

The notification, issued on Nov 5 in Gujarati, quotes the Oct 21 order from the office of the state electoral offier in Gandhinagar. According to this order, instructions were given to issue a public notification to prohibit the sale of liquor or other intoxicating materials for a free and fair election and to prevent disturbances in law and order during the legislative assembly election in Maharashtra. Further, the director general of police (law and order) and state police nodal officers also issued orders to issue a public notification.



Prohibitory orders have also been issued under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Tapi district collector Vipin Garg said, "The notification was issued according to the election commission directives. This order can be applicable to the licensed liquor shops in the district.

I am not aware if there are licensed liquor shops in the district.".
