Juska Ruti, 26, had been serving as an officer on a Finish commercial ship docked at Portland Port in Dorset when he got off to go to the pub. The court heard Ruti got 'incredibly drunk' and whilst returning to his ship he came across what he thought was a derelict building.

For no obvious reason he proceeded to smash in every pane of glass to the building, causing £9,000 worth of damage. But inside the warehouse was a stock of material used by a drainage company to line drains and pipes. The small drainage firm that rented the premises had just taken it on and so weren't insured at the time. Magistrates heard it will take the company three to four years to recover from the lossses. Ruti, who is training to be a captain with the Finish navy, pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal damage when he appeared at Weymouth Magistrates' Court.

He was ordered to pay victim Christopher Bloggs, of The Bloggs Ltd, £10,800 compensation. Patricia Sheehan, defending, said: 'He came off the ship and he got incredibly drunk. He has very little recollection of it but he accepted that he did do the damage.

'The building looked derelict and not in active use. It was not pre-planned whatsoever. 'This is a young man who has never done anything like this before, he is deeply ashamed and couldn't be more ashamed of what he did.

' Ruti, who lives in Turku, Finland, will pay the compensation at £500 a month. Share or comment on this article: Drunk sailor, 26, caused £36,000 of criminal damage when he smashed 77 windows in alcohol-fuelled rage e-mail Add comment.
