Drunk municipal engineer crashes SUV into cars, flees

Surat: A Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) assistant engineer — who was allegedly drunk — drove his SUV into two cars, hit the divider and crossed to the other side of the road in Adajan, at about 10.30pm on Thursday night. The accused, Nilang Gaywala , fled the scene with some relatives but police later apprehended him from his house.

According to a FIR filed by Amit Patel, he drove his sedan to near Bhumi Complex in Adajan on Thursday night, to meet a friend. The two were talking while sitting inside the car. At about 10.



30pm, an SUV slammed into his car from the back, damaging it to the extent that he would have to spend about Rs 70,000 on repairs. The SUV also hit the hatchback parked in front of the sedan, causing damage worth Rs 20,000. After hitting both cars, the SUV hit the divider and crossed over to the other side of the road.

A large number of people gathered and found the SUV driver was drunk. However, the driver's relatives soon arrived and whisked him away. Patel then went to Adajan police station and filed a complaint.

At about 3.30am, police apprehended the driver, Nilang Gaywala, from his house at Prabhunagar Society in Rander. As Gaywala was found to be drunk, police got medical tests done on him at Civil Hospital and began the procedure to invoke drunk driving and prohibition laws against him.

Investigators learned that Gaywala is an assistant engineer with the Surat Municipal Corporation and is currently posted in the Athwa Zone..
