According to a recent Free Press Journal report, a film and television director Siddhant Das was arrested by the authorities. On Sunday morning, he reportedly sped and rammed his car in a crowded market in Kolkata, while being under the influence of alcohol. The accident killed one person and seriously injured eight others.

He was reportedly driving from Bakrahat towards Gariahat when he lost control of the car and drove it into the hawkers and pedestrians, who were present there for their weekend grocery and vegetable shopping.

The report adds that after informing the police, the 35-year-old filmmaker was dragged out of the car and thrashed until the authorities arrived. Reportedly four bottles of alcohol were recovered from the car.
At the time of the accident, he was accompanied by two women, while one was arrested, another sitting in the backseat fled the scene. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, however, he succumbed to his severe injuries. A 68-year-old local, Joydeb Majumdar, who also sustained severe injuries, is currently battling for his life.
On the other hand, seven other injured were given first-aid and their wounds were tended to, before being discharged the same day. Only light vehicles, belonging to the residents of the area, were allowed on the stretch.
According to the eye-witnesses, the filmmaker broke through the barricades and drove his car right into the bustling and crowded market. Several carts and two-wheelers were also damaged due to the accident. More details on the incident are yet to surface.
