New Delhi: Delhi saw a 34% increase in drunken driving prosecutions on New Year's Eve and no accident-related fatalities. According to official police data, this year on New Year's Eve, 558 motorists were prosecuted for drunken driving, while 416 motorists were prosecuted in 2023, 318 in 2022, 25 in 2021, 19 in 2020, and 299 in 2019. There were four deaths reported on the New Year's Eve of 2024.
To combat the anticipated rise in drunk driving incidents, the city's police implemented a comprehensive strategy. Special teams were deployed across the city, equipped with alcometers and breathalysers to conduct roadside checks. Traffic police officers were positioned at key locations, including party hubs, to deter and apprehend intoxicated drivers.
A total of 4,583 motorists were prosecuted for various violations. These included 1,688 for improper parking, 648 for not wearing helmets, 205 for driving on the wrong side of the road, 106 for tinted glass violations, and 35 each for triple riding and dangerous driving. Sixty-three vehicles were impounded.
Special commissioner of police (traffic) Ajay Choudhary attributed the lack of fatal accidents to the enforcement measures. "This was made possible only due to the elaborate traffic arrangements to check dangerous and drunken driving," he said. Arrangements were made for areas in the vicinity of Connaught Place, India Gate, Saket, M-Block Market Greater Kailash II, Chirag Delhi, New Friends Colony, Defence Colony, South-Extension, Mehrauli, Aya Nagar border, Khanpur, Nehru Place near Eros Hotel, near Govindpuri metro station, Qutab Minar, Hauz Khas Village, Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj, Kapashera, Dwarka, Rajouri Garden, Netaji Subash Place, Rohini, Pitampura, Ashok Vihar, Model Town, Mukherjee Nagar, GT Karnal Road, Karkardooma, Laxmi Nagar, Preet Vihar, Vikas Marg and Mayur Vihar Phase-I.
