Pune: Over the last 21 days, Pune police acted against 4,200 individuals found driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol. They sent proposals to the Pune regional transport officer (RTO) to cancel the driving licences of 500 of these offenders. "On Sunday, we filed cases against 206 motorists who were found driving or riding their vehicles in an inebriated condition," said additional commissioner of police Manoj Patil.

"So far, we have sent 500 proposals to the RTO, Pune, to cancel driving licences of the people found driving their vehicles in an inebriated condition," Patil said. After the Oct 11 accident in Mundhwa, in which a food delivery person died after an Audi car driven by an inebriated businessman hit his scooter, the police started a special drive against drunk drivers. A total of 2,556 vehicle users were fined till October 31 for drunk driving.

Patil said, "Of the 4,200 drunk driving offenders, we sent reports to the RTO for cancellation of driving licences of 500 offenders. We intensified our action against drunk drivers on the backdrop of the state assembly elections," Patil said. "We hope that RTO officials will cancel their driving licences.

We sent detailed proposals mentioning the nature of the offence and where it occurred, along with the reports of the breath analyser tests," he said. "Our job is to intimate the RTO on the offence as they are the licence issuing authority. The RTO officials will take appropriate action against these driving licences," he said.

A senior RTO officer told TOI, "We have received over 300 proposals from the Pune city traffic police requesting us to cancel the driving licences of people found driving their vehicles in an inebriated condition. However, we can suspend the driving license for 90 days or 120 days. We will take the best possible action in the legal framework.

" The traffic police executed a large number of actions against the drunk drivers in the areas of Satara Road, Koregaon Park, Nagar Road, Yerawada, Mundhwa, Kondhwa, Shivajinagar and others. Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Bapu Bangar of Pimpri Chinchwad police told TOI that in the last 11 months, the Pimpri Chinchwad traffic branch had taken action against over 3,500 drunk drivers. "We have been regularly taking action against the drunk drivers," Bangar said.

Asked about the underage driver who caused an accident in Bhosari, the DCP said, "A case has been filed against the driver. We will continue our action against the underage drivers.".
