As Bonfire Night looms, experts have warned drivers about the legal and safety implications of transporting fireworks. Ignoring these regulations could result in a £300 fine, six penalty points on your licence, and even the invalidation of your car insurance . Drivers are urged to consult their insurance providers to ensure they're covered.

And they're also being advised to ensure they are not carrying more than the maximum allowed weight. Motoring experts at Swansway Motor Group told Lancs Live. : "With Bonfire Night just around the corner, it's vital that drivers understand the risks and legal obligations when carrying fireworks.

"If you're caught with over 56kg of fireworks without the required licence or registration, you could be hit with a £300 fine, six penalty points on your licence, and your insurance could be void." "To avoid such penalties, we advise drivers to consult their insurance providers to ensure they're covered when moving fireworks for personal use. Even if you're covered, it's crucial to take the necessary safety measures.

" "Firstly, you must make sure the fireworks don't get damp, as damp fireworks are more likely to leak explosive content, which can cause them to behave unpredictably when lit. "If it rains or the weather is foggy, moisture can build up inside your vehicle, making fireworks more volatile. Fireworks should always be supervised in the car, as this increases the risk of them becoming unsafe.

" The experts continued: "It is also essential to store fireworks away from any combustible materials. Items such as lighters, matches, electric fan heaters, smoking materials, or electrical installations like lights should be kept far from the fireworks. "These items are potential ignition sources and could cause fireworks to ignite unexpectedly if stored together.

"By following these safety guidelines, drivers can enjoy Bonfire Night festivities while avoiding hefty fines, penalty points, and insurance complications.".
