Since the launch of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake last week, the game has sold incredibly well in Japan. According to Famitsu , the game’s physical sales in Japan have topped the weekly charts. With the Switch leading with 641,195 sales and the PlayStation 5 version in second place with 180,575 sales.

For a total of 821,770 sales in its opening week. For comparison, the Switch releases of both Super Mario Party Jamboree and Mario & Luigi: Brothership have been outsold by the Switch version of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake . Moreover, these are just physical sales data; the game has likely sold as much, if not more, digitally on both the Switch and PlayStation 5 in Japan.

What’s also remarkable and rare is that Japanese sales are currently eclipsing their Western counterparts. For instance, the Steam sales data shows that the game has sold 39,360 copies thus far, which is not bad for a game like this in its first week but just shows how massive the Japanese reaction has been. Personally, I thought the game was great and have already had a lot of fun with the post-game content .

It’s a definitive role-playing game that has been faithfully, almost lovingly, remade. In any case, if you are curious about Dragon Quest’s history, then also feel free to check out my interviews with both Yuji Horii and Kazuhiko Torishima . Follow me on X , Facebook and YouTube .
