Published 5:00 am Friday, December 13, 2024 By obitsamericanpress Dr. Leonard Charles Breda III, a beloved father, grandfather, and lifelong champion for his community, passed away on Dec. 6, 2024, at the age of 66.
Born on Sept. 29, 1958, in Lake Charles, La., to Dr.
Leonard C. Breda Jr. and Florence (Murchison) Breda, Leonard’s life was one of service, passion, and deep commitment to his family, friends, and everyone he encountered.
Leonard was a proud graduate of the St. Louis Catholic High School Class of 1976. It was at St.
Louis that he met Sonya Pitre, the love of his life, with whom he would share 30 years of marriage. Following graduation, Leonard attended Louisiana State University (LSU), where he not only earned his undergraduate degree, but also walked on to the LSU basketball team, playing during the 1976 and 1977 seasons. A devoted LSU alumnus, Leonard remained an ardent supporter of the Tigers throughout his life.
He cherished his time at LSU and often spoke with fondness about his experiences with his coach, Dale Brown, and his teammates, many of whom were lifelong friends. Following in the footsteps of his father, Leonard pursued a career in dentistry, graduating in the top 10% of his class at Howard University School of Dentistry. His time at Howard was formative, as he forged lasting relationships with classmates who became family.
Leonard was deeply passionate about his profession, and for nearly 20 years, he served the Lake Charles community at Robinswood School for the Developmentally Disabled, treating approximately 120 clients with care and dedication. He also contributed to the Southwest Louisiana Center for Health Services (formerly known as Bayou Comprehensive Health Center) as a Board Member from 1987 to 1992. Leonard’s commitment to his community extended far beyond his work as a dentist.
He served as a Commissioner for the Chennault International Airport Authority from 1992 to 2005, holding various offices, including President from 1996 to 1998. He was also a passionate mentor, dedicating countless hours to helping young people pursue careers in healthcare, sports, and beyond. He often mentored dental students, prospective LSU athletes, and high school graduates interested in pursuing careers in health-related fields.
Though he was a brilliant student, Leonard was an athlete through and through, involved in sports from a young age, playing football at Immaculate Conception School and baseball for the St. Henry and Babe Ruthe League. He was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan and took great pride in supporting youth sports, including coaching his son at Bishop Noland Episcopal Day School.
His love for sports was matched only by his devotion to his family. Leonard was a lifelong member of the National Dental Association, and also held memberships with the Kiwanis Club of North Lake Charles, the Pelican State Dental Association, and the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry. His dedication to his craft, his community, and his family will be remembered by all who knew him.
His love of family and friends, and his legacy of compassion, mentorship, and respect for his profession will live on through the countless lives he touched. The Catholic faith provided a strong foundation for Leonard, who was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. He regularly attended Mass, having a strong love of the Eucharist, and was guided by the principles of the church.
Leonard was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Leonard C. Breda Jr.
; his sister, Charlene Breda Norman, and his son, Leonard C. Breda IV. Holding on to cherished remembrances of Leonard’s love are his children, Marjorie Breda (Patrick) of New Orleans, La.
and Leonard C. Breda V of Lake Charles, La., and his beloved grandson, Carter Breda of Lake Charles, La.
, as well as, his former wife, Sonya Pitre of Lake Charles. He also leaves treasured memories with his mother, Florence Breda of Lake Charles, La., and his sister, Elizabeth A.
Breda of Baton Rouge, La. Additionally, Leonard leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. He often included his extended family in vacations, family events, and his daily life, making them an integral part of his journey.
